Photoionization Hydrocarbon and Solvent Sensors

Photoionization detectors (PIDs) are fast, reliable and easy-to-use, often measuring down to the parts per million (ppm) range. When atoms in the hydrocarbon or solvent (ie a volatile organic compound or VOCs) are irradiated they absorb photons, which excite the atom's energy state causing it to emit an electronand ionizing the gas.

Applying an electric field to the ionized vapour creates an electric current that is proportional to the concentration of gas in the chamber. Measuring this current detemines the amount of the gaseous hydrocarbon or solvent present.
