Vapour permeability is critical to many performance and safety areas of the aerospace industry – such as fuel, electronics, panelling, seating, seals, air conditioning, airship gasbags and much, much more. Versaperm's latest vapour permeability measurement system allows users to characterise this property not just for material samples, but also for components and complete units.
This is especially important because manufacturing processes, including heating and forming, can easily change the vapour permeability by a factor of four. Problems have caused electronics, computers and aircraft to fail.
Water vapour, aviation fuel, refrigerants, compressed air and hydraulic fluids are all widely used in the aerospace industry and all of these can permeate through most materials, sometimes surprisingly easily. Being able to measure this accurately provides critical safety and performance data to designers, engineering and manufacturing companies.
The Versaperm equipment can measure this property for almost any gas and over a wide range of conditions - temperatures can range from -80 C to over +1400 C, along with highly variable pressures, environments and partial pressures / humidity.
The accuracy and sensitivity of the measurements varies naturally with the material and vapours under test, but typically is in the PPM (Parts Per Million) range, with PPB (Parts Per Billion) for some materials. Results are precise and highly repeatable.
The system can measure several samples at a time and offers a simple, intuitive automated control panel with a large touch-screen interface.
