An enormous variety of films and coatings are used to protect, preserve and enhance everything from paper to sunglasses and from steel to plastics.  In the majority of cases, the most important characteristic of the coating is its permeability, usually against water vapour.  Coatings prevent steel from rusting, strengthen paper, dramatically improve printability and even stop pizza bases and pies from going soggy!

Measuring this essential property has now been made easier, faster and more accurate by a new instrument developed and produced by permeability experts Versaperm.

The Versaperm meter has a highly automated computerised control and can cope with several samples at a time - giving results that can be accurate to better than one part per million (with some samples a few parts per hundred million).  Additionally the instrument can be configured to measure the diffusion rates of most gaseous elements (water, O₂, CO₂, hydrocarbons etc).

As an added advantage it is easy to use, requiring at most minimal training and can sometimes give results in as little as 30 minutes.  Conventionally gravimetric measurements may take several days to weeks and give significantly less reliable results.
