The Versaperm MS (mass spectrometer) is an advanced system for measuring hydrocarbon vapour permeability.  Hydrocarbon gasses are remarkably good at causing problems by leaking or "permeating" through materials, including valves, containers and coatings.  It also forms the basis for using polymer membranes in many applications, such as removing higher hydrocarbons from natural gas streams, fuel cells and hydrocarbon barriers. In all of these cases accurate measurement is critical for successful application. 

Being MS based the system can also measure the vapour permeability for virtually every other gas or gas mixture, making it ideal for both designing and quality control functions.  It is accurate in the parts per million to parts per billion ranges. Where desired it can also control temperature, pressure and other environmental factors.

The equipment is designed to measure the permeability of material samples, laminates and membranes as well as individual components or fully finished compound products.  This becomes especially important as manufacturing processes such as thermoforming, folding, moulding etc. can easily alter vapour permeability by a factor of four. 

A multi-chamber version of the Versaperm MS allow measurements to be taken on several membranes or components at the same time.

Versaperm is a technology leader in this area and, as well as the MS instrument it has developed an extensive range of specialist sensors for measuring across a range of applications. Available techniques include flame ionization, catalytic combustion, infrared, photoionization, mass spectrometry, capacitive, coulometric, electrochemical, electrolytic, gas chromatography, impedance, infrared, paramagnetic thermal conductivity, pressure measurements and semiconductor sensors.
