The Head in the Sand Approach
O-Rings and Seals and Testing

   

Understanding how O-rings and seals leak is crucial to the safety of almost every process and manufactured product.  There are two approaches – the head in the sand approach or actually testing this critically important factor. Versaperm has introduced a fast turn-around lab measurement service to measure the vapour permeability O-rings and seals based around its new high-speed testing equipment - which can turn around precise results within 30 minutes to 24 hours, instead of the weeks taken by conventional testing techniques.

This is a particularly useful as there is a problem with many seals – they don't work as well as they could or should!  Just because a seal keeps out liquid water or other liquids, people think it is working properly.  But they forget about vapours, which can actually pass through them and in great volume - before condensing on the wrong side and causing problems.

Versaperm can test and measure vapour permeability not just for material samples but also for seals, O-rings and even finished components.  Permeability can be measured not for just water vapour but- for hydrocarbons, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and any other non-proscribed gas.

Measurement of finished fabricated items is especially important because processes, such as thermoforming, extruding, moulding, heating or pressure can an items a package's permeability by a factor of four or more!

Results are accurate in the parts per million to parts per billion ranges depending on the material and vapour.  Where desired Versaperm can also control environmental conditions such as temperature and pressure, even across diurnal and seasonal cycles.

As well as its sample testing Versaperm develops and manufactures its own ranges of vapour testing equipment which are used by companies, universities, and national standards laboratories around the world.
