Pests and Agricultural Plastics
Solarization sheeting is widely used in agriculture to get rid of bacteria, fungi, weeds, mites and insects. The sheets need to do three different things to make them work properly. They gently warm the soil; keep humidity or moisture in and they act as a barrier to oxygen. Between them this kick-starts the natural solarization and biosolarization processes.
But it can only do this because the specific plastics used in the sheeting have the right range of permeability to control the process and that’s where Versaperm can help.
Versaperm equipment can measures the permeability which is critical to developing new, improved, sheeting materials. It is also used for quality control. It can determine the precise oxygen and water vapours flow rates through the sheeting. It measures both of these, individually, with just one overall measurement.
The system is reliable, easy to use and very precise, typically giving results to an accuracy in the PPM (Parts Per Million) to Parts Per Billion (PPB) range.
Vapour permeability regulates the way moisture, oxygen and other gases are kept in or out of the soil. This helps sterilise harmful bacteria at the same time as boosting beneficial microorganisms. It can kill up to 90% of pathogens whilst beneficial bacteria like Bacillus
survive and flourish.
The equipment can deal with all standard materials and tarps, even when they are laminated or include multi-compounded materials.
As well as the equipment Versaperm offer a consultancy and laboratory measurement services for companies that only need to test samples on an irregular basis.
