Solutions for Hydrogen Storage, Transport, and Pipelines

Hydrogen is pivotal in the transition to cleaner, sustainable energy, with applications ranging from energy production and transportation to industrial processes, steel, and chemical production. A key challenge is vapour permeability-induced gas loss and embrittlement in pipelines, tanks, and transport containers. Hydrogen can escape in significant volumes from these systems. Versaperm offers an innovative solution to these problems.

A favoured solution to these issues is using barrier coatings on containers, components, and pipelines. As barrier materials are developed, they need testing and Versaperm has introduced both a specialized hydrogen tester and a versatile multi-gas, multi-application, multi-environment system.

These systems measure the vapour permeability of barrier materials, components, containers and even pipelines with the hydrogen actively flowing through them. The result is fast, accurate measurements of material samples, finished components, joints, seals, valves, and complete systems.

Versaperm equipment can measure vapour permeability under a huge range of temperatures and pressures. The system is quick, precise requires, at most, minimal maintenance and is simple to use.

Hydrogen permeates through many non-metallic materials in its molecular (diatomic) form. However, in structural metals, hydrogen permeates in atomic form, leading to a wide range of hydrogen permeabilities. Versaperm's advanced measurement systems are essential in identifying and mitigating these permeation characteristics.

In addition to providing state-of-the-art measurement equipment, Versaperm offers laboratory testing and consultancy services to assist companies in managing their hydrogen permeability challenges effectively.

Editor’s Notes:
  • Hydrogen has the highest Vapour permeability of any gas, and its use as a clean energy source is rapidly growing.

  • Energy storage is a key element in the modern energy supply chain. It enhances grid stability, increases the penetration of renewable energy resources, improves energy system efficiency, conserves fossil energy resources, and reduces the environmental impact of energy generation.

  • Managing Vapour permeability is vital for the safe and efficient storage, transport, and distribution of hydrogen. As hydrogen continues to play a crucial role in the transition to cleaner energy sources, innovations in material science are essential to overcome these challenges.
