Versaperm, a global leader in permeability measurement technology, has unveiled new specialist instruments designed to meet the growing demand for hydrogen vapour testing in packaging and barrier films used across the electronics and optical industries.
With hydrogen playing an increasingly vital role in advanced manufacturing, particularly in clean energy, high-performance electronics and optical components, controlling hydrogen ingress and loss has become critical. Versaperm’s latest instruments offer manufacturers, researchers and quality control engineers the ability to measure hydrogen vapour transmission with exceptional precision.
Versaperm’s two complementary hydrogen permeability meters are engineered to suit a wide range of applications. One system employs a dedicated hydrogen-specific sensor and delivers fast, accurate and cost-effective measurements across materials such as polymers, high-barrier laminates and advanced encapsulation films. The second system is based on mass spectrometry and is designed for ultra-sensitive analysis, capable of detecting minute levels of hydrogen permeation. This is particularly crucial for OLED displays, flexible electronic circuits, photovoltaic cells and precision optics, where even the smallest gas ingress can lead to degradation or failure.
Chris Roberts, Technical Director at Versaperm, commented: “Hydrogen permeability is one of the most underestimated threats to performance and longevity in modern electronics and optics. Our instruments enable development teams to quantify and control these risks with confidence, allowing them to design longer-lasting, higher-performing packaging and barrier systems.”
The instruments are suitable for both R&D and production environments, offering automated measurement cycles, robust sample handling and compatibility with a broad range of materials. Custom sample chambers are available for non-standard formats. For organisations that do not require in-house equipment, Versaperm also offers a full hydrogen permeability testing service, delivering accurate and timely laboratory results.
Versaperm’s latest systems are already in use across sectors developing advanced displays, solar technology, sensor housings, semiconductors and optical coatings, helping companies stay ahead in a market where material reliability and durability are paramount.
Additionally, the company offers consultancy and laboratory-based vapour permeability measurements services.
